West Indian Vs Caribbean: Is There A Difference?

Did you know that someone can be Caribbean but not be West Indian? How about the fact that you can be Caribbean AND West Indian? Allow me to explain…
The term “Caribbean” has always been used to classify ALL people from the islands along the Caribbean Sea. In fact, it is often used interchangeably with West Indian and THAT’s where the confusion lies.
Sidebar- I have heard the term Caribbeans (with an S) being used to identify inhabitants or natives of the Caribbean BUT there is NO such term. People are simply referred to as either “people from the Caribbean”, by the specific island they are from (e.g. Jamaican), or simply “Caribbean people”.
BACK to my main point: not all Caribbean people are West Indian but what does that even mean?
