As an International Contributor to a radio show based in Barbados, I am often asked about the nuances of US politics. You see… it’s one thing to read about politics, or watch it on the news when you’re living in a different country. However, it’s another when you are boots on the ground and in the thick of it. There are many misconceptions about things that have happened in the United States over the years. From the George Floyd protests to the climate leading up the political rematch between Biden & Trump.
I would like to share a snippet from a recent radio interview. In this segment, I discuss how America is being viewed on the global stage, particularly in light of the controversies surrounding former President Trump. The global perception of the United States and its leadership is important; it affects international relations, economic policies, AND cultural exchanges. Check out the clip:
From my experiences living in the West Indies, and Paris… I’ve noticed differences in how each region views US politics, which CAN be eye-opening.
West Indian Trump Supporters?
The response from the West Indian community was mixed as they focused on Trump's professional reputation as a “successful” real-estate mogul rather than his values. Regarding the "grab em by the P *****" comment, I heard one West Indian guy say, so what if he does that?! I had to ask him if he would like someone to do that to his mother! I guess he didn't realize that he was co-signing assault.
France Reacts To Trump
I had recently moved to Paris, when Trump was first elected in 2016. In the weeks, leading up to the election, I had conversations with a few French people who kept asking me about Trump and his candidacy. BUT, they never thought he would become the president. Furthermore, they were mind-blown about how the election process works…. Like how you can win the popular vote and STILL not win the election. In France, the winner is elected based on the number of paper votes in the ballot boxes. Overall, many French people and the French president were concerned about Trump’s policies AND leadership style. It was not long after that France became a bit arrogant in its perception, thinking “a far-right kook could NEVA”. Then Marine Le Pen said, “hold my beer”.
An Uncharacteristic Side Of New York City
The morning after the election was like a funeral. A friend of mine from back home said the subway ride to the office that morning was so quiet, you could hear a pin drop. Which is VERY uncharacteristic of a NYC morning commute.
I can say for certain Trump HAS not only altered the perception of America but undermined its level of respect around the world. When Biden won in 2020, I was able walk around with my head up again, proudly rocking my Queens New York gear around these parts.
Global politics are a bit like high school where America is the popular kid who sets the trends and influences what almost everyone else seems to be doing for better or worse.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this topic. How do you think America’s global image has changed in recent years? Feel free to leave a comment.
Interesting read, Kemal :)
